Alberto Ortensi has received the „Competition Online“ award: His design project „EXX-Dome“ from the studio „Elastic Grid Mechanisms“ during the summer semester 2019 has received an award and prize money. The jury with Klaus Bollinger presiding has chosen three winners from the 113 participants.

Im 20. Jahrhundert wurde bewehrter Beton zu einem der wichtigsten Werkstoffe im Bauwesen. Heute ist der Erhalt der ersten realisierten Bauwerke von großem denkmalpflegerischem Interesse. Der Autor Jörg Rehm liefert die bautechnikgeschichtlichen Hintergründe und führt die Revolutionierung im Bauprozess vor Augen, die maßgeblich durch Eisenbeton ausgelöst wurde. Im Raum München wurden großmaßstäbliche Bauwerke errichtet, die international als vorbildlich galten. Mit der vorliegenden Dokumentation gelingt eine überzeugende Analyse über die Eisenbetonbauweise, ihre weltweite Verbreitung und wie sie im Münchner Raum bis 1918 zu einem Kristallisationspunkt der allgemeinen gesellschaftlichen Entwicklung wurde. In Kurzmonographien werden zahlreiche Hochbauten und Brücken beschrieben. Planern und Eigentümern, die aktuell mit solchen Bauwerken befasst sind, werden Werkzeuge an die Hand gegeben, die geeignet sind, deren langfristigen Erhalt zu sichern.

Der Gasbehälter. Barbara Berger hat diesen besonderen Vertreter der industriellen Baugeschichte zu ihrem Forschungs- aber auch Herzens-Thema gemacht, und liefert mit der vor­liegenden Arbeit ein umfassendes Standardwerk, das die hundertjährige Baukonstruktions- und Technikgeschichte des Gasbehälters nachzeichnet und diesen als ingenieurtechnische Leistung würdigt. On behalf of the International Comittee for the History of Technology (ICOHTEC) the Turriano Book Prize Committee awarded the PhD dissertation „Der Gasbehälter als Bautypus“ of Barbara Berger with a "Special Mention in the field of Industrial Heritage“. Her dissertation is regarded as a very good example of how studies on Industrial Heritage should look like.

Am 12.07.19 fand das Jahrestreffen des Bundes der Freunde der Technischen Universität München e.V. statt, der diesmal von der Fakultät für Architektur ausgetragen wurde. Nach einer Reihe von Kurzvorlesungen von Prof. Andreas Hild, Prof. Regine Keller, Prof. Manfred Schuller und Prof. Mark Michaeli wurde die Veranstaltung abgerundet durch Präsentationen von Forschungsarbeiten von wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeitern.

In diesem Rahmen stellte Barbara Berger ihre Dissertation „Der Gasbehälter als Bautypus“ vor, die im September bei der TUM. University Press erscheint. In Form von Skizzenbüchern, Zeichnungen, Fotos und Archivalien erklärte sie die Geschichte, Funktion und Konstruktion des oft verkannten Bauwerks.

Guest Professorship for Professor Dr. Bill Addis during summer semester 2019

Within the August-Wilhelm Scheer Visiting Professorship Program, the Chair of Structural Design has succeeded in engaging Bill Addis as a partner to intensify international cooperation. The main goal is to develop a joint research project. The knowledge that has been gained from the design and construction history of wide-span lightweight structures will be put to use for maintenance and repair. The focus here is on buildings after 1945. In particular, membrane constructions, grid shells made of wood and steel are the focus. Here, the combination of building history, civil engineering and architectural history is of particular importance.

Former student exhibits work at the Handwerks & Design Fair

Former student, Katrin Leitner (nee Fleischer) took part in the "Sonderschau Exempla" at the Handwerks & Design Fair from 11 - 15.03.2019. One of 21 stands at the special exhibit, Katrin presented two models, both of which were created during her Master's design studios at the Chair of Structural Design. 

The motto for EXEMPLA 2019 was "Textile - material of the future". More information can be found here.

Barbara Berger Receives a Grant from the Dr. Marschall Foundation

On behalf of the Werner Konrad Marschall and Dr.-Ing Horst Karl Marschall Foundation, the Faculty of Architecture at the Technical University of Munich has awarded Barbara Berger with a project grant for her research and dissertation, “The Gas Holder as Building Type”. Her work examines the construction history of the 19th and early 20th Centuries – developed in England, optimized in Germany, prevalent around the world – illustrated by examples in Italy. The grant supports a publication by the TUM University Press. Barbara Berger received the grant on 12 October 2018.

Advances in Architectural Geometry 2018

The conference for “Advances in Architectural Geometry” (AAG) took place in Gothenburg from 24-25 of September. In collaboration with the Institute of Applied Geometry (Prof. Helmut Pottmann), Eike Schling presented new insights on the geometry, design and construction of curved support structures. Der Lehrstuhl für Tragwerksplanung war im Rahmen des "Tag des offenen Denkmals 2018" in Oberschleißheim vertreten und informierte dort unter regem Interesse der Öffentlichkeit über die Junkershallen. Visiting Professorship for Dr. Bill Addis during the summer semester 2018

In the framework of the August-Wilhelm Scheer Visiting Professor Program, Bill Addis will join the Chair of Structural Design for the summer semester 2018. Bill Addis is a consulting engineer based in London. He is the author of over 100 papers and books on engineering history and design, has curated several exhibitions and is a Member of the Editorial Advisory Panel for ‘Engineering History and Heritage’ published by the ICE. In recent years he has lectured at the universities of Cambridge, Bath, Reading, Rome, Zurich, San Sebastian, Innsbruck and Brussels. During the summer semester 2018 he will lecture the elective course "Design, materials and construction of historic structures" within the Master study program in Architecture at the Chair of Structural Design.

Telford Gold Medal 2017 for Prof. Rainer Barthel

The article “The Gothic tower of Freiburg Minster, Germany: analysis and repair” by Prof. Rainer Barthel, Joram Tutsch (Chair of Structural Design, TUM) and Joseph Jordan (Barthel & Maus GmbH) in the Journal, Engineering History and Heritage has been acknowledged as best paper in 2016 by the Institution of Civil Engineers in Great Britain and has been awarded the Telford Gold Medal 2017.

"Schülerinnen forschen – die Herbstuniversität der TUM": Workshop am Lehrstuhl für Tragwerksplanung

Am Mittwoch den 3. November 2016 hat am Lehrstuhl für Tragwerksplanung im Rahmen von "Schülerinnen forschen – die Herbstuniversität der TUM" ein Workshop zum Thema Membranbau stattgefunden: "Das Verhältnis von From und Kraft. Wir entwerfen ein gespanntes Seilnetz". Die Teilnehmer haben anhand eines eigenen Entwurfes die Gesetzmäßigkeiten von Membranstrukturen erlernt und angewendet.
