CURVATURE - Bending the Rules
Within the framework of "Experimental Structures - Gridshells", the Chair of Structural Design organized a Workshop on 22.04.2016 with the artist Alison Grace Martin:
CURVATURE - Bending the Rules
Alison Grace Martin works with curved structures made up of identical elements that are interconnected. At her studio in Tuscany, she works with bamboo that she cuts down to ca. 55cm-long, elastic sticks. The workshop invited 10 Master's students to build a ca. 3x3x3m structure together with the artist.
This structure is made up of eight intertwined, suspended cubes. Four bamboo sticks create a warped rhombus, in which an elastic membrane is stretched. In this way, a continual, inverse curved surface is formed. Structures like these can be found in nature, for instance in sponge forms. Its overriding characteristic is the creation of maximal surface area with minimal use of material.
The sculpture can be seen in the courtyard facing the Audimax auditorium until 27.04.2016.
