Subproject A11: Institutional reflexivity in sociotechnical networks: Participatory analysis and design of cyclic innovation practice in PSS

Moving to PSS makes it increasingly challenging to coordinate the interaction between an increasingly heterogeneous group of actors. This requires 1) innovation work, defined as the social praxis of developing innovations. Such innovation work must be 2) periodically evaluated and refined. Finally, 3) in a process of institutional reflexivity, the emerging organizational forms of cycle-management must themselves be monitored and adjusted. Sub-project A11 addresses the third level: How can organizational arrangements themselves be cyclically evaluated and refined? It aims at identifying appropriate forms of institutional reflexivity and develops a participatory approach to co-design them with relevant stakeholders.

Motivation

  • Suitable and flexible organization of the development of innovations within companies
  • Support and refinement of innovation work through cycle-management
  • Continuous monitoring and adjustment of the organizational forms of cycle-management themselves

Results of funding period 2 (New project, initial funding since October 2014)

  • Ascertainment of societal conditions of change in industrial production
  • New actors (service providers, small and medium-sized businesses, local stakeholders) as an organizational problem
  • The flexibility of organizational arrangements is a prerequisite for PSS-producers

Prospective results of funding period 3

  • Development of forms of participatory design of institutional structures
  • “Toolkit Innovation Work”: Development of a research instrument
    • A tool for research and analysis
    • Design of innovation work in PSS
  • Requirements: Understanding of the socio-technical conditions of innovation processes in the production and delivery of PSS against the backdrop of current transformations of the industry
  • Production of empirical insights into organizational forms suitable for such innovation processes
