Construction knowledge of early modernism, Shukhovs strategies for economical steel structures
Current research project at the Chair of Structural Design of the TUM in cooperation with the project partners Universität Innsbruck and ETH Zürich. This three-year project is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft DFG.
The renown Russian engineer V.G. Shukhov conceived lightweight structures that constitute the most progressive and original constructions in the history of building with iron and steel. Due to the Russian revolution, Shukhovs work had fallen into oblivion in the Western world and resurfaced not until the publication of the book “the art of saving construction”, written by R. Graefe, O. Pertschi and M. Gappoev in 1990.
The aim of the current research project is to find answers that relate to the realm of construction theory and the history of industrialization. The questions are attended by an interdisciplinary team. Archive studies, building archeology and construction history as well as structural engineering methods are essential for the research. One of the focal points is the investigation of Shukhovs hyperboloid lattice towers, one of his most prominent contributions. All in all, it is intended to recognize Shukhovs work in a comprehensive and holistic way.
