Energy Supply and Power Connection

The step towards a sustainable way of mobility can be achieved by combining electromoblity and electricity generation from renewable energies. Thereby, both technologies support each other positively. Usually, the celectricity consumer set the level of power demand which has to be covered by the power plant operators. The unstable electricity generation from renewable energies must thereby be regarded. Electromobility offers totally new possibilities: By regulated charging (Demand Side Management) of the electric vehicles the current demand can be adapted to the current supply within certain limits. Furthermore, the battery (which all electric vehicles contain) offers new possibilities of decentralized power control. By energy integration from the vehicle's battery into the electricity grid (Vehicle to grid - V2G ) the quality of electricity supply can be improved: During periods of low power generation from renewable energies (e.g. during still air) the energy saved in vehicles can be used. Later, in times of increased renewable power generation the vehicles' batteries can be recharged.

Herefrom totally new potentials for generation, transport and storage of electrical power arise. It is important to combine the different apects intelligently and to coordinate them by new controlling mechanism (Smart Grid). Academics of the Science Center for Electromobility work on this to enable a sustainable form of mobility as well as an increased rate of renewable energies in the power supply.
