Battery Research
Not only new techologies are developed within the TUM Science Center for Electromobility, but also fundamental research is carried out in order to enable future technologies. Thereby, a special focus is battery research as the battery is one of the most crucial components of electrically driven vehicles. In order to achieve an adequate range of the car, a battery pack with high weight and high space consumption is needed. By appropriate modification and material choices within batteries, the specific power and the energy density of the energy storages can be improved. Thereby, the range of an electric vehicle can be increased while the weight and dimensions of the battery stay the same.
A further step to improve technologies of energy storages is the usage of a new, innovative battery chemistry. Up to now lithium-ion cells are predominantly used in electric vehicles because of their high power and energy density. A big step towards a multiple today's values of the energy density is the use of lithium-sulfur or lithium-air cells. These could offer a new dimension of energy content thereby making possible significantly longer ranges. Therefore an important focus within the TUM Science Center for Electromobility is the research of materials to make these techologies usable in the future.
