Subproject D2: Action goal oriented interactive visualization of model dependencies to reduce complexity in the cycle-oriented transdisciplinary design of PSS innovation processes

The aim of subproject D2 is to support the cycle-oriented design of PSS innovation processes by means of appropriate interaction and visualization approaches. For this purpose, a method for the interactive visualization of model dependencies, which arise during the innovation process, is developed. By such a visualization approach a common understanding of the stakeholders involved in the innovation process can be increased by linking their mental models. Furthermore, resolving inconsistencies in the model dependencies can be simplified by the visualization of possible recommendations for action.

Motivation

  • Complex heterogeneous model landscape
    • Different models within the disciplines
    • Different levels of abstraction in the models
  • Information flows between models
    • Within the levels
    • Between different levels
  • time-consuming identification and classification of dependencies between the various models and model relationships
    • Detailed knowledge of the specific models needed
  • Due to the complexity, the detection of inconsistencies between models is difficult
    • Different understanding of the process
    • Different semantics
    • Changes in one model affects to other models
    • cross-model representation does not exist
  • Transdisciplinary teams with different views on the innovation process
    • Problems in mutual understanding

Preliminary work

  • Analysis of factors influencing a representation
    • Context of the representation
    • Definition of data properties
    • Analysis of the complexity of data and their relation
  • Classification of interaction mechanisms
  • Development of decision criteria and a set of rules to use interactive 3D representation in the data visualization
  • Empirical study to reduce complexity in the process control: 2D vs. 3D
    • 3D and interaction beneficial during complex problem situations

Prospective results of funding period 3

  • Cross-discipline interactive visualization approach for a cycle-oriented design of the PSS-innovation process (or task-oriented respectively action goal-oriented)
  • Improved knowledge transfers in transdisciplinary teams by inclusion of mental models of individual stakeholder and teams
  • Supporting the information retrieval for different action goals by interaction and navigation methods
  • Supporting the assessment of the effects of actions by the visualization of recommendations
