Modular PDMS-based micro reaction system

The work is concentrated on the development of modular micro reaction systems possessing of a fixed size of 26mm x 76mm and set interfaces to the macroscopic world. The whole system consists of stacked slides. All slides are fixed in a frame which offers 10 ports for fluidic and electric contacts. Mainly micro technologies are used to produce the slides of PDMS and glass. PDMS is characterized by a simple a good reproducible processing. It is transparent and thermal stable up to 150°C. Adversely is the swelling in some organic solutions. Other materials, like metals, ceramic or polymers could be used, too. The microstructures in the slides are channels covered leak tight by the slide stacked above. A glass slide is used as final covering layer. This allows in combination with a window in the fram the optical detection of the reaction.

The modular micro reaction system shall be used in schools for the demonstration of simple chemical reactions, e.g. color reactions of two colorless liquids. Due to its consistent modular design it can be used by University students to quickly and simply built up a reaction system on demand. Experiments can be carried out very quickly and at low costs.

The modular micro reaction system allows to design and to build up very quickly a micro reactor for desired reactions. It can be decomposed after each reaction and reassembled on demand.
