Geriatronics

Objective of the overall project

In connection with its foundation, the Munich School of Robotics and Machine Intelligence (MSRM) has decided to focus on research into the future of health as part of a planned lighthouse initiative "Geriatronics". As one of three modules of this lighthouse initiative, seven subprojects of the project X applied for here are conducting application-oriented geriatric research to shape the future of health. Among other things, the focus is on the further development of a personal service humanoid and its control and connection to a control centre via remote stations. In combination with a high-precision real-time visualization of bodily functions, a telemedical high quality support can be achieved. Further important geriatric technologies are researched and validated with medical assistance robots and devices for early rehabilitation. In addition, field studies are carried out in cooperation with old people's and nursing homes in order to test the developed technologies in a real environment. In order to ensure far-reaching social acceptance and sustainable anchoring in everyday nursing care, the project applied for here will develop accompanying training system and training concepts, develop novel training, technology experience and experience systems and create public geriatronics forums on the subject of geriatronics.

Mission of the LRT in Geriatronics

 

The Institute of Astronautics heads the third subproject in Geriatronics. It is developing a control center equipped with novel operator telepresence stations for remote operation and the use of service humanoids by experts. Administrators can multimodally connect to the service humanoid for maintenance purposes or in case the system needs help with a task. The hardware of the operator telepresence stations is based on commercially available input and output elements. Research and development within the framework of the subproject include interface development and teleoperation with adaptive autonomy control. Safe and stable communication with all relevant data is also required for safe operation. Accordingly, data must be prepared, prioritized and compressed and the transmission channel optimized. In addition, automatic error detection and function restoration are part of the research.
