Abstract:
In this research internship, a modular development platform is developed that stands as a proof-of-concept for integrating heterogeneous retired battery packs from different Electric Vehicles (EVs). Battery packs in EVs are considered to be retired once their capacity level drops to 70 % of their initial value and they have to be replaced since they cannot guarantee the same range specifications. Instead of recycling these retired packs, which still hold 70% capacity, reusing them in other less stringent applications provide both economic and environmental benefits. However, batteries from different EVs vary in size, capacity, usage and configuration and therefore, they cannot be arbitrarily connected in series or parallel or cannot be charged or discharged with same current. For this purpose, each battery pack has to be associated with a dedicated power converter thereby allowing accurate control of charging and discharging power. In this research internship, a modular DC-DC converter is developed that can be associated with different types of batteries and the necessary control algorithms for controlling the charging and discharging behaviour of the batteries are developed.
