Take attention on the the EDEN Doctoral Seminar on Developing Teaching Excellence be held in London, U.K. on May 16-20, 2016.

Programme Coordinator & Faculty

The faculty members are recognized scholars, actively engaged and committed  to teaching excellence

  • Dr. Danielle Lyssimachou, Cass Business School, U.K
  • Dr. Pär Mårtensson, Stockholm School of Economics, Sweden

Aims

While there is increasing emphasis on the development of specialised research skills and discipline-specific research expertise for doctoral students at business schools, there is surprisingly little, if any, formal teaching training tailored to doctoral students in a business school environment. This can often leave doctoral students at business schools unprepared and lacking confidence in the area. This course aims to fill this training gap by offering a comprehensive, theoretically-informed and practically-grounded, course in developing teaching excellence for doctoral students at business schools.

Target Audience

This course aims to equip doctoral students at business schools with valuable teaching and pedagogical knowledge and skills, in order to be successful in their current and future academic teaching duties. This practical course offers the opportunity to doctoral students, even with relatively little or no prior teaching experience, to reflect on learning and teaching, to gain useful practical knowledge and skills and to practise and share experiences in a safe environment with the help of expert faculty.

Topics

  • This theoretically-informed and highly practical course will cover, among others, the following themes:
  • Reflecting on teaching in terms of facilitating learning Getting to know your audience – different learning styles
  • Stimulating learning and engaging students inside and outside the classroom
  • Practising teaching using different classroom scenarios
  • Appreciating challenges and the need to adapt when teaching
  • Giving and receiving constructive feedback in teaching situations
  • Setting balanced and effective assessments
  • (Re)designing a module – building blocks for success Developing one’s teaching skills – confessions of (early) teaching experiences
  • Reflecting on the qualities of inspiring teaching
