NeXus Summer School 2015
Working in the context of NeXus Water-Food-Energy, a Case Study
25.08.2015 - 08.09.2015 at TUM
Scientific Program
The NeXus Summer School will provide an interdisciplinary forum on water and life sciences in Africa and Europe. The focus for this year will be on the study area of the lake Chiemsee including the areas Tacherting and Waging in Germany, where all Nexus relevant problems can be shown and compared with case studies in our partner countries. Example topics include: Pesticide pertinence, water treatment, erosion and contamination from diffusive sources, water recourses management, land use and land management, maintenance of lake and catchment, nutrient cycle, biodiversity and restoration of aquatic ecosystems and responsibility to resources in the Nexus context. The scientific format of the summer school includes keynote talks, lectures by leading experts in the fields of life and water sciences from our partner universities and TUM, group works, as well as presentations by students and discussion groups. The summer school is also meant to increase the scientific collaboration and student exchange between all our partner universities and TUM.
Program schedule
The talks and workshops of the NeXus Summer School will take place at the TUM City Campus in the first week and at the Oskar-von-Miller Institute near Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the second week. The general Schedule will look like this:
- Presentations of the students’ case studies
- Lectures to gain general knowledge about the fundamental questions and possible solutions
- Group work to solve the defined problems
- Discussion about the students’ case studies and possible changes due to the recently gained knowledge
The language for our summer school is English.
Target group and requirements
The course is open to graduate and upper-level undergraduate and PhD students in the fields of engineering and life sciences (e.g. ecology, biology, agricultural sciences) with an interest in water and land use related challenges and solutions. The number of participants is limited. The selection procedure is organized by every partner university on its own.
Accommodation
Participants will stay the first week in a hostel in Munich city center and the following week in a hostel near the Oskar-von-Miller Institute in Wallgau.
