Energy Storage

At today’s state of the art the battery is still responsible for high cost regarding electric vehicles and also significantly contributes to their weight. The selection of battery cells is crucial for the mass and volume efficiency of the energy storage device. Therefore,an extensive analysis is necessary for the Visio.M project.

For the selection of suitable lithium-ion cells, a cell characterization is performed in which the energy and power density of different high-energy lithium-ion cells is assessed. The behaviour of the cells is tested both under load with high power as well as through exposure to low temperatures. Optimal operating ranges for maximum durability are to be determined in this way.

The cells’ efficiency decreases as the temperature rises. For this reason, the air cooling of the cells is particularly taken into account. Various cooling approaches are compared and thermal simulation models are created. Thus, optimal thermal operation strategies will be developed to ensure the longest possible durability of the battery pack and a sufficient range even at low temperatures.

These challenges are met by the Institute of Automotive Technology (Lehrstuhl für Fahrzeugtechnik) and the Institute for Electrical Energy Storage Technology (Lehrstuhl für Elektrische Energiespeichertechnik) in collaboration with LIONSmart.
