Concept of a novel battery management system for electric vehicles

Electromobility is an important technology for the future. To increase the customer acceptance it is necessary to be able to recharge the battery quickly, to increase battery safety and to lower the costs. Fast charging can be detrimental to the battery life by irreversible changes in the battery materials. This is the starting point for the project "NOVBATCON": In close collaboration with Chinese Scientists a novel concept fora battery management system shall be researched. Therein, the internal state of each battery cell shall be monitored continuously via a special alternating current based electrochemical procedure permitting early diagnosis of changes in the electrode layers. The data analysis is based on a physical battery model validated by electrochemical measurements at model cells. By large sampling rates and combination with modern IT methods efficient control strategies shall be established. This shall enhance the fast charging ability and increase the battery life. The results also shall be used for standardization.
