Nanne de Ru, Mitgründer der Powerhouse Company,  und Direktor des Berlage Institut für Architektur und Städtebau, unterrichtet an Architekturschulen weltweit: Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, the Ecole Speciale d’Architecture in Paris, the Oslo School of Architecture and Design u.a.

About:
Nanne du Ru
studied Architectural Engineering at the Amsterdam University of Applied Science and received the Master of Excellence in Architecture in 2002 from the Berlage Institute, Postgraduate Laboratory of Architecture, in Rotterdam. In 2011 he was awarded the Rotterdam Maaskant Prize for Young Architects. In 2005 Nanne de Ru co-founded Powerhouse Company, an office for Architecture, Urbanism and Research, with branches in Rotterdam and Copenhagen. Powerhouse Company is working throughout Europe and Asia on design and research projects. The work of Powerhouse Company is published and exhibited internationally. The work of Powerhouse Company won international acclaim with amongst others the Nykredit Prize in 2012, the Dutch Design Award in 2009 and three nominations for the prestigious Mies van der Rohe Award. Prior to founding Powerhouse Company, Nanne de Ru worked from 2002 to 2004 at Rem Koolhaas’ AMO, the research branch of OMA, as a lead researcher and designer.

Powerhouse Company was founded by Nanne de Ru (1976, the Netherlands) and Charles Bessard (1970, France) who met at the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam. After working for internationally famed offices (Ateliers Jean Nouvel & OMA), Bessard and De Ru launched Powerhouse Company in 2005 as a European firm, opening directly two offices, one in Copenhagen, Denmark and one in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

The office is specialized in architecture, interior design and urban research and is working on international projects. Work of Powerhouse Company has been exhibited at the Guggenheim museum in New York, the Cooper Hewitt museum in New York, the Maxxi in Rome and the Netherlands Architecture Institute in Rotterdam as well as various bienales such as the 2005 Rotterdam Architecture Biennale, the 2010 Shenzen Bienale and the 8th Sao Paulo Biennale of Architecture. Projects and texts of Powerhouse Company have been published in various magazines such as Domus, A+U, Mark Magazine, A10, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

Featuring selected projects—from designs to finished buildings—this publication of "Ouvertures" presents the architects’ special, so-called integrated approach. Through key concepts such as context, collaboration, design, or detail, Bessard and de Ru elucidate their understanding of contemporary architecture, one that can satisfy the requirements of urban life in terms of aesthetics and function alike. In order to do this, the range of architectural possibilities does not always have to be exhausted; sometimes simple, high-quality solutions are preferable. This goal manifests in the Powerhouse Company’s buildings and becomes palpable in the photographs taken by Bas Princen and the visualizations by MIR.
