Academic English Cluster
The various branches of the Academic English Cluster strive to meet all of your English communication needs. All students of the Department of Architecture are invited to audit any of the 80-plus English courses offered every semester, all of which are geared towards specific fields or professional competencies. At the English Writing Centers in Munich and Garching you will get one-to-one feedback on your articles, dissertation chapters and other texts. The English Coaching Program, in turn, offers one-to-one or small-group tailored to your individual needs. Within the Coaching Program, you might make use of Interactive Editing support for manuscripts or articles, work with a coach in preparing lectures in English, or simply improve your conversation skills.
German as a Foreign Language
If you are new to Germany, you might like to boost your German language skills as you integrate into the TUM community and Munich life. As doctoral candidates, you are welcome to take part inthe free eight-week evening courses especially tailored to meet your needs as doctoral candidates and offered on the Garching and Weihenstephan campuses. Those looking for a crash course can take part in the fee-based German courses during the semester breaks, covering a semester’s worth of material in just five, or even two, weeks. Another option is to audit one of the 60-plus German courses offered at all levels (A1 through C2) each semester. If you are writing academic work in German, you might visit our German Schreibberatung (writing consulting) program, where you can receive one-to-one feedback on your writing.
Additional Programs at the Language Center
In addition to the 17 languages on offer during the semester and as block courses during breaks, the Language Center organizes intercultural communication courses and events such as the international film series to enhance intercultural discourse. Each semester the Global Voices lecture series raises topics at the interface of society, ethics and technology. Those looking for a more casual way to keep up with a foreign language might take part in our weekly language tables (Stammtische) or our TUMtandem which partners native German speakers at the TUM with native speakers of various other languages from the TUM academic community.
