Call for Participation – The Circular University

A design workshop titled “The Circular University” will take place at the Department of Architecture in October 2017. The workshop on defining concepts of circularity is organized by BauHow5, the alliance of leading research-intensive European Universities in Architecture and the Built Environment, together with Allmann Sattler Wappner Architekten and Swiss company Vitra. Students (5th semester or higher) are encouraged to apply for the design sprint.

The sprint is a phased five-day process (October 9-13, 2017; daily 10am-5pm) with key-notes, work sessions and reviews for answering critical questions through analysis, design, prototyping, and testing ideas with customers.

Since 2009 more people are living in urban than in rural spaces. The construction sector consumes the largest share of raw materials and resources in the world, which are decreasing rapidly.
The circular economy is about to tackle everything and define new business models. Producing differently to consume less. Designing for disassembly or deconstruction. Re-directing waste into a circle as a resource. Is the focus on physical-bound concepts, buildings, materials, value chains and the economy enough? Why not approach circularity from where we learn to design and research? Can it be viewed as a virtual concept, related to knowledge, skills, and principles of acting and experiences, which are channeled back into university-like settings?

How would a ‘Circular University’ look like in all its possible dimensions?
Challenge these questions in the Design Sprint at TUM Department of Architecture. If you are motivated to challenge the existing, are curious to learn new methods and like to work in interdisciplinary teams.

Students, 5th semester or higher, studying Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Industrial Design, Management, Civil & Environmental Engineering, Science and Technical Studies, Politics and Technology or Informatics are invited to join the five-day workshop (3 ECTS).

The Call for Participation is open until September 22, 2017.
Apply by submitting a short statement or idea, why you should participate and a short CV.
